Kelly Willis for No Depression

About a month ago, I was asked by No Depression to do a fullpage illo on Ryan Adams. Come to find out that the interview fell through and they wouldn't be running the R.A. story, but they still wanted to use my inkin'.

I was then asked to do a 5" x 7" illo of Kelly Willis. I'll admit...up to that point, I had not heard of her. It was a 'toughy' since due to a quick turnaround (due to the R.A. story falling through)....and most of all...my trouble with drawing pretty women! I've drawn plenty of haggard, old, bluesy guys, but when it comes to drawing and capturing a cutie, I have to practice.

After reading the interview, I wanted the illo to be colorful, bright, and cheerful since it seems her and her music comes across this way. Maybe I did Ms. Willis justice!
